Follow these summer food safety tips to make sure your outdoor meals are nothing but delicious.
Cooking foods ahead of time? Be sure to chill them thoroughly in the refrigerator before packing your cooler.
If grilling, pack raw meats, poultry, or seafood on the bottom of the cooler to reduce the risk of them dripping onto other foods.
Use a separate cooler for drinks so the food cooler won't be opened and closed constantly.
Keep the coolers in an air-conditioned car until you reach your destination. Once there, make sure the coolers stay in the shade with lids closed. Bring extra ice to replenish them if needed.
Pack wet, disposable cloths and paper towels to clean hands and surfaces in order to prevent cross-contamination while preparing, grilling, and serving food.
When taking food off of the grill, don't put cooked items on the same plate that held the raw meat.
Two-hour rule: Don't leave perishable food unrefrigerated for more than two hours.
Discard picnic leftovers that have been sitting out for more than an hour or two.
